How and where obsidian is formed

Known as volcanic glass, obsidian is formed from molten lava that has cooled before it has had time to crystallise. Occurring in areas of recent volcanic activity, significant deposits have been found in many locations including the United States, Canada and South America.

Found in many varieties, obsidian often combines with white cristobalite to form snowflake obsidian.

Obsidian throughout history 

With its ability to splinter to form sharp arrowheads and cutting blades, obsidian was used by many cultures during the Stone Age to craft a variety tools and weapons. Its reflective surface also meant that it could be polished and used as a mirror for scrying. It was considered sacred by the Aztecs who knew it as teoteti (meaning "divine stone"). Tezcatlipoca, the Aztec god of sorcery and divination was believed to live within obsidian.
