How and where is aquamarine formed?Â
Sparkling blue like the ocean, it's easy to see where aquamarine gets its name: aqua marinus meaning 'water of the sea'.
It is a type of beryl which is a hard, clear mineral, formed when magma under the earth's crust interacts with mineral rich rocks called pegmatites. Its different varieties are formed when trace elements such as chromium, iron or manganese are present. Aquamarine owes its blue hues to minute quantities of iron being trapped within the beryl crystals as they grow. With these cool blue shades of the sea it's almost hard to believe that aquamarine originates from such intense heat!
Aquamarine is found all over the world with the majority sourced from Brazil.Â
